Mary Sings A Lullaby (2011)

Mary Sings A Lullaby was written in June 2011 within 24 hours, and released the next day. As with most of my works, the text is original.

Set for SSA with mezzo-soprano solo, the work was written to showcase the mezzo-soprano voice, which I feel is incredibly undervalued in choral music.

Too often it is the soprano voice that is highlighted, while the mezzo soprano becomes the “backing vocals”, yet a mezzo soprano provides a beautiful mixture of richness and light, and has the flexibility of providing depth in lower notes that a true soprano cannot usually provide.

Within a few days, the piece had received a fair amount of interest, with planned performances announced for the 2011 holiday season in the USA, in Canada and in the UK.

I was also contacted by a performance trio in New Zealand, who requested a three voice version of the piece, so I put together a trio version of the work, which is now also available.

Mary Sings A Lullaby is suitable for any sized vocal group from trio up to full sized choir.

The vocal parts are designed to be easily singable by female vocalists of most vocal ranges, providing flexibility of performance.

The four part version of the work can be performed with piano / harpsichord accompaniment, or with guitar or a cappella.

The three part version of the work likewise can be accompanied by piano / harpsichord or guitar, but does not suit a cappella performance as well. In both scores, guitar chords are provided.

Mary Sings A Lullaby
Sleep, my pretty one,
Sleep my darling,
Let the stars be your crown and the night wind your guide.

Sleep, my darling,
Sleep, my sweet one,
Let your eyelids be closed and your sleep bring you peace.

Now the sky floods with moonlight, and peace stills the land,
And the air rings with bliss, for hope’s hour is at hand.

Sleep, my pretty one,
Sleep my darling,
Let the angelkind watch you, encircling their wings.

Sleep, my darling,
Sleep, my sweet one,
Let your dreams give you comfort: fear nothing, my love.

Now the sky floods with moonlight, and peace stills the land,
And the air rings with bliss, for hope’s hour is at hand.
